Wine Route: Queretaro

Queretaro is a destination in central Mexico, it is the capital of the state that welcomes you with a great landscape where a great example of colonial architecture stands out, its impressive aqueduct. The Mexican Ministry of Tourism has created a tourism program with the support of local authorities to preserve and develop the richness of the region, such as folklore, traditions, culture, history, nature, and cuisine. This program is called Pueblos Mágicos (Magical Towns). In Queretaro there are seven of them, where nature, architecture, tradition, handcrafts, and gastronomic delights come together. In Queretaro, reference is made to the wine region, which is currently a trend.
The seven Pueblos Mágicos of Querétaro are:
• Bernal
• San Miguel
• Amealco
• Jalpan de Cerra
• Cadereyta
• San Joaquín
• Tequisquiapan.

All are unique and beautiful, however, the most famous is Tequisquiapan; which has achieved fame for being the main gateway to the Cheese and Wine Route; it is located 62 kilometers from the capital city. It was founded in 1551 by the Spanish conquistador Nicolás de San Luis and it has been included in the «Magical Towns of Querétaro» program since 2012 due to the attractions it offers to the visitor.

There is no specific route to follow, the tour goes according to the traveler’s taste, the ideal is to live and enjoy the experience. Try the products, get to know the traditions, customs, and legends. Taste dishes and discover the most representative places of the area.

Most of these wineries organize tours to understand the winemaking process, walk among the vineyards, know the different varieties of red and white grapes, explore the cellars and their secrets, and finally taste a glass of a great Mexican wine. And to complete the visit, you can also visit the cheese dairies and enjoy their wonderful handmade products, both sweet and savory. Some of these are: Quesos Vai, Rancho La Hondonada, Rancho Santa Marina, La Quesería Néole among others, they also have tours. In addition, discovering the landscape in a hot air balloon is guaranteed fun and allows you a full view of the entire region, including the most famous monolith in Mexico and second in size after the Sugar Loaf in Brazil, the famous Peña de Bernal.
One of the most emblematic events in the region is the annual National Cheese and Wine Fair, where culture, music and gastronomy come alive in a colorful event. It is highly recommended to travel during the grape harvest season, which is from June to September and attracts an increasing number of visitors as individuals or groups for conventions and business trips. The wine region is a great option for unique and unforgettable celebrations such as weddings, baptisms, graduations, etc.
